Italian Jannik Sinner earned a straight-sets victory Monday to set up a second-round match against Rafael Nadal at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.

Sinner defeated Ugo Humbert of France 6-2, 6-4 in 90 minutes on center court.

Russian Aslan Karatsev joined Sinner with his 20th victory of the season as he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 (2), 6-4, setting up a date with Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

American Taylor Fritz booked a date against Novak Djokovic with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Evans of Britain. Fritz trailed 3-1 in the first set before rebounding.

"I was really frustrated to give away the early break," Fritz said. "He played two pretty good points, then I missed two forehands. I thought I was hitting the ball really well right from the beginning. I just told myself not to get too upset about it, as I was playing well. Dan has been playing well lately, beating Novak in Monte-Carlo, so it's great to get a strong win. I am going to try my best (against Djokovic)."

Karatsev advanced in one hour, 42 minutes by saving two of three break points and dropping just seven points on his first serve. He improved to 7-3 on clay.

Sinner fell behind 0-2 in the second set but responded by winning four games in a row, connecting on 14 winners.

Italian wild card Gianluca Mager ousted Australian Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-3. Fellow Italian wild card Lorenzo Musetti ousted No. 15 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-4, 2-0 as Hurkacz was forced to retire in the second set. Another Italian qualifier, Stefano Travaglia, defeated Benoit Paire of France 6-4, 6-3.

Croatia's Marin Cilic defeated Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Qualifier Federico Delbonis of Argentina downed Russian Karen Khachanov 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Spanish qualifier Hugo Dellien defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance.

Hungarian Marton Fucsovics was a straight sets winner over Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 6-0, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Chile's Cristian Garin defeated Lloyd Harris of South Africa, 7-5, 6-2; Japan's Kei Nishikori defeated Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-4; and German Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Slovakia's Aljaz Bedene, 6-3, 6-1.
