LIMA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Argentinian manager Ricardo Gareca will remain Peru manager despite a poor start to the South American zone's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament, the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) said on Monday.
The Blanquirroja have just one point from their first four qualifiers, prompting speculation in the Peruvian press that the 62-year-old could be sacked.
"The only thing I want to tell you at this time is that Ricardo Gareca will continue with the national team," FPF sports director Juan Oblitas told a news conference.
"He has our support and, most of all, the support of the players," he added.
Gareca, who has been Peru's head coach since February 2015, guided the Blanquirroja to the 2018 World Cup in Russia - their first appearance in football's biggest tournament since 1982.
