BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- Total deaths in India due to COVID-19 pandemic surpassed the 120,000-mark on Wednesday, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

With 508 deaths in the past 24 hours the total death toll reached 120,010. The total COVID-19 tally reached 7,990,322 as 43,893 new cases were detected across the country since Tuesday morning.

BEIJING -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Mexico surpassed 900,000 on Wednesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

With the total COVID-19 cases in the country reaching 901,268, Mexico's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 89,814 as of 0430 GMT Wednesday, the CSSE data showed.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. biotechnology company Novavax announced on Tuesday that the phase 3 clinical trial of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine in the United States and Mexico has been postponed to the end of November.

Novavax's phase 3 clinical trial, whose postponement was attributed to some delay from the original timeline of large-scale manufacturing, has obtained support from the U.S. government.

WASHINGTON -- A senior U.S. State Department official tested positive for COVID-19 after a recent trip to Europe, U.S. media reported on Tuesday.

Citing several U.S. and foreign officials, The Washington Post reported that Peter Berkowitz, the director of policy planning at the State Department, tested positive after his trip to Britain, Hungary and France earlier this month.
