16 Apr 2018, 19:38 GMT+10

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, April 16 (PIA) -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has recorded two separate earthquakes in the province Monday (April 16).

PHIVOLCS recorded a 5.4-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Gonzaga in Cagayan province at exactly 3:43 AM. The quake recorded a depth of 23 kilometers.

The second quake happened at exactly 5:05 AM located 38 kilometers 29 degrees southeast of the same town.

PHIVOLCS said the earthquakes were tectonic in origin.

In a text blast, National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said there are no expected damages and aftershocks brought about by the two consecutive quakes in Cagayan.

Intensity 1 was also felt in Santiago City in Isabela province and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte today.

Lilibeth Gaydowen of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the power transmission services of NGCP remain normal despite the recorded 5.4 magnitude earthquake.

"The Luzon grid remains intact as there had been no reported cases of power interruptions and damaged transmission facilities in Cagayan Valley and nearby areas where the earthquake was felt," Gaydowen said. (ALM/MDCT/PIA-2)
