Pro-Tibet demonstrators detained in Beijing
Latin America News.Net Wednesday 20th August, 2008 (IANS)
Chinese security personnel detained five American pro-Tibet activists after they unfurled a banner in Beijing's Olympic Park.
The banner, which said 'Free Tibet' in English and Chinese, was displayed for about 20 seconds late Tuesday before being taken down by officials.
The five demonstrators belong to Students for a Free Tibet, and the organization's deputy director, Tenzin Dorjee, accused the Chinese government of trying to turn the world's attention away from its abuses in Tibet as the Olympics take place.
'However, the creativity and determination of Tibetans and their supporters has once again ensured that Tibetan voices are heard and seen in Beijing despite the massive security clampdown,' he said.
'The Chinese leadership must realize that the only way it can make the issue of Tibet disappear is to acknowledge the demands of the Tibetan people and work with them to bring an end to China's occupation of Tibet.'
The organization has staged seven peaceful protests in Beijing over the past two weeks to try to place the issue of Tibet onto the Olympic agenda.
The protests have included a banner being hung near the Bird's Nest Stadium, a display of Tibetan flags near the Bird's Nest just before the opening ceremony and a symbolic die-in at Tiananmen Square.
The group has also organized a protest by a Tibetan woman with flags outside Tiananmen Square, a blockade of the Chinese Ethnic Culture Park and a 'Free Tibet' banner hung outside the headquarters of China Central Television.
More than 40 members and supporters had been detained and deported before Tuesday's detentions.

What is free Tibet? need to first define 'free'
A free Tibet will not be able to economically sustain itself on its own. Chances are it will want freedom, as well as eternal economic freebies & material comforts from China, something called guilt money or 3rd world donations from China or from the U.N. for generations to come. Long term, some of its 'conscientious' people will have to sneak into China as illegal immigrants the same way the Mexicans are to America. Better have them stay put and develop under the thumb of China so its people will learn to work efficiently, effectively as well as 'acquiring good work ethics' as healthy self-sustaining world citizens, other than to stay in still water, praying 24 hours a day. Does the world measure the GNP of a country by the number of prayers & temples, and the size of the Potala Palace? The world is changing and with globalization, responsible countries will need to help its citizens to keep up with productivity and set up good systems to perpetuate healthy livelihoods, thus allowing their spirituality to grow. They cannot retain their feudal way of life and then count on the conscientious uninvolved others to support them. So much for 'freedom' and 'independence' - it’s their version of 'independence' which means spiritual freedom but total economic dependence on others. They cannot practice this type of reverse discrimination and expect to have it all to their advantages. No pain, no gain. Better prevent the growth of another parasitic group if all possible, unless Tibet is ready to cut itself totally loose from the rest of the world forever. Now, that’s true freedom. Are the Tibetans ready to die of starvation just like the N. Koreans? Not again, and no more aids.
