US man gives birth to baby girl
Latin America News.Net Thursday 3rd July, 2008
People magazine in the US has reported that Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman but lives as a man due to hormone treatment, has given birth to a girl at an Oregon hospital.
Mr Beatie, 34, who is legally a man, retained his female reproductive organs during sex change therapy 10 years ago.
The baby, conceived through artificial insemination using donor sperm and Mr Beatie's own eggs, was born on June 29.
It is believed Mr Beatie and his child are both well.
The child is not being breast fed because Mr Beatie had his breasts surgically removed during his conversion.
Upon deciding to have a child about two years ago, he halted his bimonthly hormone injections and resumed menstruating.
Mr Beatie's wife was unable to conceive because of a prior hysterectomy.
The couple, from Bend, Oregon, are legally married and he is recognised under Oregon state law as a man.
