Mexican president meeting with John McCain
Latin America News.Net Thursday 3rd July, 2008
U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain is meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon Thursday on the final leg of a three-day trip to Latin America.
Senator McCain is expected to discuss illegal immigration and express his support for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Mexico's war on drugs.
The Arizona senator began the day with a tour of the Basilica de Guadalupe, a major center of worship for Catholics in the nation's capital, Mexico City.
McCain arrived in Mexico late Wednesday, after a two-day trip to Colombia, where he met with President Alvaro Uribe.
The presumptive Republican nominee said the flow of drugs from Colombia and Mexico continues to be a major challenge for the United States.
McCain praised Mr. Uribe's efforts to crack down on illegal drugs and leftist guerillas and expressed support for a free trade agreement between the U.S. and Colombia.
Senator McCain urged Colombia to address its human rights record, a key reason the pact is currently stalled in the U.S. Congress.
McCain faces the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, in the November general election.
Senator Obama has announced plans to visit Europe and the Middle East later this year in an effort to boost his foreign policy credentials.
Obama's campaign has confirmed stops in Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Aides would not confirm if the Illinois senator will visit Iraq and Afghanistan.
