Indian American spreading the teachings of Gita
Latin America News.Net Sunday 11th February, 2007 (IANS)
An Indian American woman is doing her bit to promote world peace and cultural understanding through the teachings of the ancient Indian holy book 'Bhagavad Gita'.
Prabha Duneja, founder president of the Gita Society, spends most of her time helping others in Pleasanton, California.
Since 1998 when the Gita Society, a non-profit organisation (NGO), was formed it has played a significant role in bringing the various ethnic groups closer and increasing religious and cultural understanding. It is a spiritual and educational organisation devoted to share the message of the Hindu scriptures of the Gita, Vedas and Upanishads and the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The idea to set up the society came when Duneja met a visiting holy man from India who told her that she was destined to help others, according to Inside Bay Area, a local newspaper.
'It was as if somebody knocked at my head,' Duneja said.
Through her books and educational CDs, Duneja has educated many in the ways of Hinduism and meditation.
Duneja encourages everyone to meditate 15 to 20 minutes each day, which, according to her, 'promotes better relationships in all facets of life'.
She also spreads her message through speaking at various organisations and schools and teaching mediation at the local Shiva-Vishnu Temple.
The society funds three orphanages, one school for handicapped children, one school for the blind in India and one school in Mozambique. It is currently building a school for handicapped children in South Africa.
The 60-year-old woman grew up in India and moved to the United States with her husband and a young son in 1977. Email this story to a friend
