Seven trapped in Colombia coal mine

At least seven miners were trapped underground in an accident in a coal mine near Cali, some 500 kilometres south of Bogota.Jorge Ivan Ospina said rescue workers were trying to clear access to the trapped workers and that the miners had access to oxygen and could communicate with the outside."We know they are OK because we can hear them," he said.The mayor did not specify the cause of the accident but local media reports said it appeared to be the result of mudslides following heavy rains in the region.In Colombia, the fifth largest coal exporter in the world, 173 miners were killed in accidents in 2010.The country has been hit with massive floods this year linked to the meteorological phenomenon known as La Nina, characterised by cooler-than-normal water temperatures in the Pacific equato...
